Hidden Wineries June 2005 Newsletter
Hidden Wineries Momentum
Hidden Wineries Momentum Hidden Wineries announces the much anticipated arrival of our new, handy travel guide, the Hidden
Wineries of Southern California: Travel Companion! The Travel Companion includes maps, wine characteristics, grape varietals charts, and
personal wine notes areas. It also features winery names, addresses and phone numbers for more than 65 wineries from Malibu to San Diego, for only $9.95.
What's Happening in the Vineyard?
The winter rains leached much of the salts and other impurities out of the soil and provided the vines with a deep irrigation, giving them a good push coming out of dormancy. The growers will be keeping a cautionary eye on the vines for signs of mildew, because of the above average and late season moisture. Now, the vines are in full bloom, lush and healthy with a nice berry set. The wineries are expecting an on-time harvest (August) or possibly even an early harvest - our thanks to Mr B. Bauer, Vineyard Mgr for Stage Ranch Co./Leonesse Cellars for this vineyard status update.
Wine Affectionado News
Wineries committed to producing premium wines reduce the volume of grapes their vines produce. Crop thinning directs increased energy into the remaining fruit, resulting in superior grapes. Vineyards are capable of producing more than 10 tons per acre, yet top-notch wineries reduce the yield to 2 tons or less. Foliage produced by the canes creates shade for the plumping fruit, but when the crops are thinned, so too are selected leaves, thus improving ventilation.
