What's Happening in the Vineyard?
Cordones (main vines) are now stretching and curling themselves around the trellis. Typically, Southern California vineyards use 10-gauge wire trellis systems in either a bilateral or quadrilateral configuration, depending on the individual winery's preference. The wineries also choose between horizontal and vertical trellising. Traditional horizontal trellis systems are still the norm in Southern California vineyards, however some use the old-world style of allowing the cordones to sprout from the top of the bud wood and more wineries are beginning to explore the advantages of vertical trellising: greater air circulation, greater sun exposure to the canopy of leaves and greater accessibility for mechanical harvesting. For the most part, the sun has returned to sunny Southern California and we are expecting a good year.
Wine Affectionado News
The particular grape used to make wine is its varietal. In the US, when the wine bottle label specifies a varietal, 75% of the wine contained in the bottle must be of that varietal. The composition of the remaining 25% is up to the winemaker's discretion, depending on the outcome desired. In France, a varietal wine must be made 100% of the grapes of that varietal. In the US, 100% is indicated on the label, when the wine is made solely from that varietal. Varietal grapes from different appellations (grape-growing regions), soils and microclimates render individual nuances in a wine's flavor and bouquet. The body, tannin and balance of wines are determined by the recipe the winemaker uses in the winemaking process. Each varietal imparts individual personality in the wine.
