Hidden Wineries February 2005 Newsletter

What's Happening in the Vineyard?

"Napa with a splash more sun" February continues the resting cycle in the vineyards. The cordones, or vines, have been trimmed back and all that remains is the silent stalk. Viticulturists, or grape growers, use this time to plant row crops, including barley, poppies and legumes, between the sleeping rows of vines. Row crops provide nutrients that enrich the next season's soil with valuable nitrogen and minerals to enhance the development of flavor in the grapes. The heavy rainfall throughout Southern California this winter will make the wines of 2005 unique.

Wine Affectionado News

Each month we will feature information on varietal wines or wine-related issues. This month we bring you notes on Carignan. Carignan (or Carignane) is a red varietal grape that was first planted in the South of France. Today, it is also planted in Italy, Spain and Southern California. It is rare to find a pure varietal of Carignan wine. It is more commonly used in custom blends for its deep purple color, high alcohol content and rich tannins.
